Trade Enjoyment

When I was a young man, I attended a national seminar from a prominent. speaker in the chiropractic profession. The doctor was so excited about his presentation he was on fire, and people came just to watch him burn. With enthusiasm he repeated a phrase that I wrote down that became a mantra to myself over the coming decades.

As I opened my chiropractic practice I repeated his advice frequently. It was simply one phrase. I love what I do. I do what I love. Building a practice from scratch in rural America can be a significant challenge. But when you love what you’re doing, it makes it so much easier. When you love what you do and do what you love your work nearly seems like play. In fact, it’s difficult to take vacations. When it seems like every day at your practice is one. You just can’t wait to get the day started.

Yesterday I tuned into a trading seminar online. One of the presenters on option strategies was well into his late 60s. This man was so excited he made the 20 some year olds look like sloths. He engaged from screen to screen with seemingly endless tips of the trade. It was like it was his first day on the trading floor even though he had been in this profession for well over 35 years. He mentioned that he could barely wait to get in front of his trading screens every day. The challenge of figuring out the market and finding successful trades was so exciting to him that he had found an enjoyable lifetime profession.

Of course, one can have a calm enthusiasm for their trading. Knowing that most mistakes are made by emotional trading followed by regret, a steady demeanor is likely the best character trait of a swing trader in it for the long haul. Like a patient hunter waiting for the prize to come your way, you calmly wait for the game to come right into your trap.  Your patience and calm enthusiasm pays off over days and weeks.

You are probably aware that surveys reveal that over 70% of employees go to work for only one reason, money. They don’t really enjoy their work but tolerate it so that there is some money left over after the month. They must pay their bills. Enthusiasm for their work rarely enters their mind.

If you have the itch for trading and enjoy the game, it really can be a fun endeavor. Transitioning from work for the sake of work to your mission in trading is a fantastic journey. Enjoying trading as you integrate your trading into a well-balanced lifestyle leads to a profession anyone could learn to love.

I love what I do. I do what I love
